| Description: |
We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join our team and play a central role in product development initiatives. This position will report to the Manager of the Systems Engineering Group. The Systems Engineering Group is engaged in a wide spectrum of activities, including: product requirements definition, verification unit prototyping, system simulation and analysis, test program design and execution, control logic creation, reliability monitoring and forecasting, troubleshooting, and sustaining engineering. The systems engineer’s work will be focused on developing current & future generation hydrogen production & compression appliances.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Plan experiments to assess component and system performance, reliability, and robustness consistent with specifications
- Configure test infrastructure (utilities, instrumentation, controls platform, data acquisition, diagnostic equipment, safety checks
- Conduct component, subsystem, and integrated system testing
- Compile, analyze, and report test data
- Develop, implement, and/or optimize control schemes supporting system function
- Create and/or run models to predict performances and facilitate design improvements
- Conduct root cause identifications and implement corrective actions
- Conduct FMEA’s and HAZOP’s and develop risk mitigation plans
- Specify and select process equipment that best balances performance & cost
Qualifications: (required unless otherwise noted)
BS/MS (Mechanical, Chemical, Systems, or Controls Engineering)
3-6 years development experience, including both hands-on and analytical work
Required Skills and Abilities
- Solid grounding in engineering disciplines
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative and responsibility – a “can-do” attitude is a must
- Demonstrated ability to lead & motivate team activities
- Familiarity with typical systems hardware (plumbing, wiring, pumps, blowers, heat exchangers, filters, valves, regulators, power converters)
- Experience with engineering instrumentation (flowmeters, pressure sensors, thermocouples)
- Facility with data acquisition systems and principles of automated systems
- High level of troubleshooting acumen
- Ability to manage large datasets, including writing high level scripts and manipulating data in frame of suitable coding environments, e.g. MATLAB
Desirable Skills and Abilities
- Integrated development experience (design, analysis, prototyping, and testing)
- Process/system simulation experience (MATLAB, ASPEN)
- Statistics & data analysis methods capabilities (MINITAB)
- Training and experience using Six Sigma principles a plus
- Experience with hydrogen production equipment (large or small scale)
- Experience with large equipment design & scale-up
- Familiarity with prevailing codes & standards of equipment design
- Machine and shop skills

The successful candidate must possess a BS degree in Engineering or related discipline. A MS degree in Systems Engineering is a plus. Full knowledge of systems engineering disciplines and at least ten years of related experience are required. Level II accreditation by the Defense Acquisition University is desired. Level III accreditation is a plus. Experience with US Department of Defense Acquisition and Systems Engineering Processes is desired. Experience with NASA programs is a plus. Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Project and PowerPoint is required. Experience with requirements management tools (e.g. Rational Requisite Pro, DOORS) is desirable.
The Systems Engineer will:
- Conduct critical analysis of processes, plans, results and designs, and provide recommendations for improvement, corrective actions and/or risk mitigation
- Develop top level requirements definition, requirements flow-down, requirements decomposition, technical risk identification, and requirements verification and validation
- Generate system and sub-system requirements documents including requirements traceability documents
- Develop detailed engineering schedules in support of Program Integrated Master Schedules and Integrated Master Plans (IMP/IMS)
- Provide support and information to Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) activities
- Develop and track risk mitigation, integration, and test plans
- Provide systems engineering guidance to junior level systems engineers, engineers and other technical support personnel
- Manage and balance the technical, cost, and schedule parameters to meet program commitments
- Interface with customers, partners, subcontractors and IPT members to provide technical direction, oversight and information
- Communicate effectively and clearly present technical approaches and findings
- Support writing and costing design sections of proposals
- Schedule flexibility to support critical deadlines may be required.
