Title:	Pro-E Design Engineer
Description:	6-9 month contract mechanical design engineering position in support of team delivering specification, ideation, analysis, design, development, verification, and manufacture of state-of-the-art mobile robotic systems Job Responsibilities: • Assist in translating product requirements into mechanical subsystem specifications, including quantified performance metrics. • Benchmark other products and conceptualize alternative methodologies in delivering functional requirements. • Understands and articulates technical risks and design margin throughout process, ensuring that supervisor understands and is aware of new risks as they arise. • Leverage analytical tools to select optimal architecture and verify subsystems meet design intent. Upfront tool usage includes Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis. Also may include FEA structural, thermal and fluid flow analysis (using ProMechanica and CFDesign), mechanism simulation (using ProMechanism) and spreadsheet-based analysis tools. • Complete mechanical layouts and detailed part design, creating and/or updating 3D CAD models using Pro-E Wildfire 5. • Leverage rapid prototyping approaches in early design verification, including several in-house rapid prototyping technologies and extensive machine shop capabilities. • Conduct cross-functional design reviews (including Contract Manufacturers) and implement Design-For-Manufacturing / Assembly / Service / Recycling / … disciplines to optimize designs prior to tooling parts. • Use GD&T and follow internal drawing standards to generate appropriately dimensioned drawings with realistic tolerances that assure desired assembly performance using Tolerance Stack Analysis. • Work with Quality Assurance team to determine appropriate level of component, system and/or life testing to verify designs. • Perform methodical root cause analysis and rapid resolution for any non-compliance in system performance. • Ensure that all design documentation throughout process is clear, thorough and stored in a well-structured manner in the appropriate data repository (using PTC’s Windchill and MS SharePoint). • Work with our Far East Operations team in supporting tool qualification, prototype builds and other launch activities at Contract Manufacturers in China. • Initiate and processes engineering change requests as needed to resolve deficiencies in released designs, reduce costs and/or improve performance. Required Skills/Experience: • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience • 4 years minimum experience in product development of mechanical systems • 2 years minimum experience with 3D CAD using Pro-E Wildfire 4 or 5 • Injection molding and plastic part design • PDM usage, especially with PTC’s Windchill v9.1 • Able to work effectively with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, matrix-managed environment, with evolving (and sometimes ambiguous) responsibilities, as a part of a multidisciplinary team • Strong interpersonal, team building, organizational, communication and prioritization skills Desired Skills/Experience: • ASME drafting standards, dimensional management methods and GD&T highly desirable • Failure avoidance methods, including DFMEA • Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, Serviceability, Recyclability • Material selection, especially with plastics • High-volume consumer electronics development from concept through debug and into production • Overseas contract manufacturing, especially in China • Human Factors / User Experience design, analysis & testing • Small mechanism design, especially DC brushed motors, gears, bearings, wheels, linkages, etc. • Structural design & FEA, especially with ProMechanica • Fluid flow – small fans, pumps, tubes, CFD methods, especially with CFDesign • Floor care product design, especially battery-powered portable vacuum cleaning systems • Sensor systems, including rotational encoders, infrared, sonar, inertial, laser scanners, vision • Statistics, including Six Sigma, reliability engineering, DOE, comparison testing, Cp, Cpk,
